Quishing: The New Threat to IT Security

A new form of scam has emerged in the world of cybersecurity: quishing, in which scammers deploy fake QR codes. This form of phishing poses a growing risk, especially with the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by criminals. AI enables them to set up highly credible, personalised attacks.

What is Quishing?

In quishing, criminals spread fake QR codes through various channels such as e-mail, text messages or even physical letters. When the recipient scans the QR code, it redirects them to a rogue website, or installs malicious software that can intercept sensitive information such as passwords. These types of attacks are rapidly gaining in popularity, partly because QR codes are becoming more common in everyday use.

AI and Social Engineering

What makes quishing particularly worrying is the use of AI by scammers. With the help of AI, very realistic messages can be crafted, tailored specifically to the victim. This significantly increases the effectiveness of the attack, as the messages are often barely distinguishable from real communications from legitimate companies.

Preventie en Waakzaamheid

As a business, it is and will remain important to take proactive measures:

  • Train employees: Regular training on how to recognise quishing is essential.
  • Implement strict verification protocols: Make sure QR codes are always verified before they are scanned.
  • Use advanced security tools: Consider AI-driven detection solutions to quickly identify and neutralise suspicious activity.

Conclusion

Quishing is a threat that should not be underestimated. It is essential to take both technical and educational measures to ensure your organisation's security. The combination of AI-driven attacks and human weaknesses makes quishing a serious challenge in today's cyber landscape.
