What Recent Figures Say

Belgium is seeing a worrying rise in cyber attacks this year. Check Point Software Technologies reports that in the third quarter of 2024, the number of cyber attacks worldwide reached record levels. The increase in Belgium is a staggering 69% compared to last year, representing an average of 1,231 attacks per week. Similar increases are also seen in the Netherlands (69%) and France (70%), while Luxembourg even reports an 82% increase. The origins of these attacks are often concealed, with hackers bypassing geoblockers by hiding behind botnets and devices in the US, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Sectors and Attack Techniques in Picture

Software vendors, healthcare and the financial sector are the three most affected sectors. The most common attack type is Remote Code Execution (RCE), responsible for 65% of all vulnerabilities. In addition, AndroxGh0st is the dominant botnet acting on various operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux).

Brand phishing and hacktivism

Microsoft remains the most popular brand for phishing attacks, followed by Apple and Google, while new players such as Alibaba also appear in phishing rankings. Hacktivism is on the rise, as evidenced by recent attacks on Belgian media outlets and the CCB. Experts say this highlights the urgent need for all sectors to strengthen their cyber security.

The growing number of cyber attacks is forcing Belgian organisations in all sectors to treat cybersecurity as a top priority and strengthen their defences against rapidly evolving cyber threats.
