The number of cyberattacks continues to increase globally, while security investments are not yet fully able to prevent these threats. This is the case even as cybersecurity budgets have reached record highs and security tools and vendors are increasingly available. These insights are from Arctic Wolf's 2024 Security Operations Report.
The report, based on observations from more than 6,500 organisations, provides a number of key recommendations for better security outcomes. One of the main conclusions is the crucial importance of 24/7 monitoring. Indeed, as many as 45 per cent of security incidents occur outside regular business hours, partly due to the widespread use of cloud-based applications. This highlights the need for constant vigilance.
In addition, the study shows that a plethora of different security tools can sometimes lead to confusion and overload for internal security teams. Identity & Access Management (IAM) tools, for example, generate a large number of alerts, with identity telemetry responsible for seven of the top 10 indicators of security breaches.
Moreover, it appears that commonly used business applications are a popular target for cybercriminals. Three of the four most affected applications are from Microsoft. This highlights the importance of quickly identifying and fixing vulnerabilities to mitigate potential damage.
To best protect businesses, thorough, continuous monitoring of the IT environment is necessary.
