Azure Pay As You Use vs Azure Reserved Instances

Are you looking for ways to reduce your Azure costs?

Then Reserved Instances may be the perfect solution. With these, you can save up to 72% on your Azure costs by reserving virtual machines (VMs) for a period of 1 to 3 years.

How does it work?

You essentially buy capacity on Azure VMs for a specified period and region. In exchange for that commitment, you receive a significant discount on the price of the VMs.

Could it be something for your business?

Reserved Instances are ideal for workloads that:

  • are long-term: it is only cost-effective for workloads that last longer than 1 year
  • are stable and predictable: that is, you need to be sure that you will use the reserved VMs during the term of the reservation
  • require fixed computing power: you can reserve VMs with different configurations, so you can find the perfect solution for your needs

How to get started with it?

Very simple:

  1. determine your needs: how many VMs do you need? What VM configuration? How long do you want to reserve?
  2. go to the Azure portal: there you can view pricing and purchase the reservation
  3. choose the right Reserved Instances: there are several options, choose the one that best suits your needs
